TURP side efefcts after 6+ weeks

Post a new topicby tbsolecki on Fri Dec 11, 2009 11:26 am

I had a TURP procedure done 6 weeks ago. Ever since I have been miserable. The urine stream is now good, but every time I need to urinate I also either have a VERY SMALL BM or just pass gas. This is each and every time. I have not had what I consider a normal BM since surgery. Before surgery my BM was just fine. When I urinate, if I sit and try to have a BM the pain/burning sensation (feels like from rectum to tip of penis) is not as severe as when I just try to stand and urinate. I have to urinate 4-5 times a night and just about every time I stand up. I only have 6-8 seconds to get to the bathroom. My urologist initally gave me Dextrol xl to try to control the frequency. It helped a little but after 1 week I was not emptying my bladder so he took me off of dextrol and put me back on Flomax to try to empty the bladder. This has had the opposite effect by making me need to urinate more than before the Dextrol. Has anyone seen/had these side effects? I have another appt with urologist in 9 days. Just looking to see if this is expected or out of the ordinary. Thanks for any help and/or suggestions.

Sorry you are experiencing these problems. I can only tell you this much. After my TURP (laser), I did have quite a bit of stinging and burning when I urinated. I asked the doc about that, and he said it was probably from the catheter that was in for a week after the surgery, and that it would go away. It did.
I am a bit surprised the Flomax didn't work in your case. It usually does make things better. After my surgery, I was afraid to stop the Flomax. I was doing SO well, I had the mindset that anything I might eliminate at that point would remind me of what it was like (bad, bad) the days and weeks before the surgery. I finally stopped it and things have been pretty good. You might ask the doc how come you are getting up so many times at night to urinate. That seems excessive. Might be something else going on down there, but I wouldn't get too worried right now until you see him. They may want to do an ultrasound to check to see how much/how little you are voiding. Not a bad idea. They will also check for an infection, etc. while you are there I'm sure, so that will be ruled out. Let us know what happens. I'm curious myself. Good luck.
