PVP Prostate procedure using a Diode 980 laserI am new to the forum, but just thought I would tell all about my prostate procedure last Monday (Jan 18, 2010)...I am 71 years of age, in good health, no smoke, not overweight. At this age my prostate was enlarged (comes with the territory)..My Urologist wanted me to have the microwave procedure in his office (he has the machine)...After doing some research on the internet I found that this procedure was not that effective, and was somewhat if not very painful. I asked my Urologist about the PVP procedure and told him I wanted to do it, as the success of the microwave is only 50% at best..Those odds didn't look good to me, especially when he told me that if the microwave didn't work that he would next do the PVP procedure....So I told him lets just go right to the PVP...The procedure was at a hospital in the operating room....I was given some oxygen, and then the anesthesiologist put me under...The procedure took about 50 mins. and when I woke up it was done. I had a catheter that I kept in overnight...next day I returned to the doctors office, and it was removed. Before the catheter was removed, the nurse poured water in it and filled my bladder. My first pee stung a little and had some blood, but no big deal....I emtied out (peeing like a race horse) and went home. I was told to stay on Flomax for 2 weeks...unil I return for the post op. appointment. When I got home, the first 2 days it stung just a little at the start of urination...but after 2 days, no blood in the urine, and no more stinging...I seem to be peeing more frequently, but I guess thats normal for a while....I'm getting up about 3-4 times in the night, but I empty right away..I am told that the bladder will calm down in a while....The laser my Urologist used was a Diode 980, and it is a "side-firing" laser....the latest and greatest....So far I am very happy I decided to do the PVP instead of the microwave, or any other procedure...Hope this info is helpful.
