My son was diagnosed at birth with aortic stenosis/bi-cuspid valve. We were told he needed to be monitored carefully because at some point intervention would be needed. For the first seven years of his life we went to the cardiologists every six months at which time they would do an ekg and an echo. At age seven we started going yearly, never knowing what we were going to be told. We were given athletic restrictions immediately, and told he could never play sports at a competitive/varsity le...Read the full article

I know exactly how you feel... My son is 10 years old with an aortic stenosis bicuspid valve, and he has had a total of 5 catheters 1 of which he had a balloon.... He loves sports and every year when the school has basketball sign-ups he's got this gloomy look on his face and he always ask mom can I play? Well as you know with his condition he's limited to what he can do...and Basketball is the biggest No No.... So I always have to look like the "Bad Mommy" and tell him he can't....I feel that he worries about his condition but He just doesn't understand that he can't do these things...and I'm like you people probably think well it's just a game or just a sport...But for some reason this child loves his sports and the game...

My seven year old daughter was diagnosed with AS on March 5th. We go to another ped. cardiologist this week so get another opinion in regards to protocol. The doc we saw said to come back in a year, however, I want another dr's opinion on how often to follow up, etc. She, too, enjoys all sports and so far, I've been told not to limit her activities, but to carefully watch her for signs of fatigue, etc. The internet is wonderful, as you can quickly realize you're not alone and read other's success stories and comments. It helps, and I thank you for sharing your story. I'll be checking back for more updates. Hope your son has a great freshman year! (I also have a son who is a freshman this year!)
